Three Bay Shore High School students have been named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Derek Brown, Joseph Canale and Samuel Murdock (pictured above) were among the more than 1.6 million students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors.

Commended Students represent the top 3.3. percent of young people from across the country with the highest scores on the qualifying test.

Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses, according to the National Merit website.
