Bay Shore native Joe La Puma’s mega-hit YouTube show “Sneaker Shopping with Complex” (now syndicated on MSG) has beaten out Lady GaGa and other big names in entertainment to win a coveted Webby Award, it was just announced.
Deemed “The Best of the Internet,” voting for the Webby’s all happens online, and by fans.
He gave much of the credit to people in Bay Shore circulating news about his nomination, and for voting for one of their own.
“It’s an honor for ‘Sneaker Shopping’ to be recognized by the Webby Awards — a designation The New York Times has described as ‘the internet’s highest honor,'” La Puma told GreaterBayShore. “I have been fortunate that the show has allowed me to travel all over the country and even to China, but I’ll never forget working as a salesman at the South Shore Mall in Bay Shore, New York.”
After working at Finish Line in the South Shore Mall for years while trying to break into journalism, La Puma is now the VP of Content Strategy for Complex — a pop culture media empire founded by fashion designer Marc Ecko.
He also hosts Complex’s Sneaker Shopping show, through which the 2001 Bay Shore High graduate has interviewed dozens of A-list celebrities, ranging from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, to comedians such as Kevin Hart.
His 2019 Webby Award came in the Fashion & Beauty category.
“The support I’ve received from the Bay Shore community over the past couple weeks has been a truly a humbling experience,” La Puma added.
“It reaffirmed to me that we take care of our own.”
