A prominent building in the heart of Brightwaters Village is about to get a major facelift, complete with a new tower and vestibule with a weathervane.

Plans three years ago to reimagine the strip of stores at North Windsor Avenue and Orinoco Drive had actually called for a clock tower.

But the building’s owners shifted plans after feedback from the village.

“They’re very enthusiastic about nature, and the winds and the shores, so the weathervane plays more on that nautical feel,” said Teresa Alessandro of Rockwell Alexander Properties, Inc., which owns and manages the building.

The village issued building permits on Tuesday, and construction fencing went up soon after. Currently, the building houses Dulce de Leche Cake Shop, Brightwaters Cleaners and Spring Kitchen.

The building’s largest space is currently vacant, but Rockwell Alexander, as part of the construction, is adding more basement space to make it more suitable for a restaurant, or even a unique retail destination, Alessandro said.

Other plans for the building, aside from building the tower and digging out the basement, include a new facade, new windows, and electricity upgrades, among other work.

The new shopping center will be called Brightwaters Commons.

“We’re kind of restoring it to its natural charm, which the village likes,” Alessandro said, adding the project “will set the building standard and village aesthetic for the future.”

The work is expected to be completed sometime in August.
