West Islip’s William Welch outpaced 3,215 golfers in route to winning the 2019 World Amateur Handicap Championship in Myrtle Beach.
For the uninitiated, the tournament is one of the largest amateur competitions worldwide, spanning five days and playing on 60 golf courses. This year marked the 36th annual outing.
Welch, a mail clerk for the Town of Islip, became a world champion in the Flight Winners’ Playoff race after shooting a net 69 (gross 85).
In addition to nabbing a flashy trophy, Welch won a $600 gift card to the PGA Tour Superstore, with chances to win other prizes.
Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently congratulated Welch for his performance. See picture above.
