The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Suffolk County and Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, and Orange counties running through 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 27.

A thunderstorm warning is also in effect today for Long Island and other parts of southeast New York, as well as southern Connecticut and northeast New Jersey.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely with damaging wind gusts of 60 mph or higher, along with large hail as the primary threats,” reads a statement from the NWS.

Brief heavy rainfall is also a strong possibility with local areas such as Bay Shore seeing between a quarter and half of an inch of rain.

More stormy weather is expected throughout the week into Saturday as remnants of Hurricane Laura touch down in the Northeast.
