Ali Khan was sick of having to drive to Hicksville for quality Indian food.

“Why do I have to drive to Hicksville when I can just do it myself?” he would tell himself.

That’s what prompted the South Shore resident to open up Khyber Grill & Gyro in Bay Shore.

The restaurant within Khan’s Exit 42 Deli at 270 Spur Drive South, right off the Long Island Expressway, opened about four years ago.

“We offer authentic Indian and Pakistani food with hints of influence from Nepal and the Mediterranean region,” said Khan.

Khyber Grill lists over 35 entrees, including its popular Chicken & Lamb Gyro Over Rice and Chicken Seekh Kehab.

Ali said another go-to item is his Chicken Tikka Masala — a dish filled with chunks of marinated chicken topped with a creamy spiced curry.

There’s also several vegan and vegetarian options like its Aloo Saago, which is potatoes and spinach covered in Indian herbs.

All the food is made fresh, Khan says, with its meats cooked to order in a clay BBQ pit.

“There’s no one doing this in this area,” he said.

Khan told GreaterBayShore he hopes to bring this concept to a local Main Street in the near future.
