The West Islip Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is about to induct its most decorated class yet.
“These are All-Americas, multi-All-State, State Champions — really far and beyond previous classes,” said the West Islip School District’s athletics director, Tim Horan.
Choosing these inductees was a tough task too, said Horan.
“The selection process is extremely, extremely difficult,” he said. “We are looking for the best of the best among their peers.”
In addition to looking at athletic accomplishments, the committee must choose from athletes who graduated at least 10 years ago. The organization inducts new athletes about every three years, with its first ceremony dating back to 1995.
This year is the school district’s ninth athletic Hall of Fame ceremony, where 22 former West Islip athletes will be honored on Saturday, May 19.
Among the selectees are four players who currently play professional sports.
Those include Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nicholas Tropeano, Toronto Blue Jays catcher Patrick Cantwell, New York Lizards defenseman Ryan Flanagan, and Boston Cannons midfielder Justin Turri. Brian Caufield also played professional lacrosse for the Rochester Rattlers.
“It’s the first time we ever had that before,” said Horan.
The ceremony will begin at West Islip High School at 6 p.m. and will be followed with a dinner at Captain Bill’s at 7 p.m.
To attend the dinner, tickets must be purchased. To learn more, click here.
